I used a bit of that blue nylon rope with the clip end of a (pre-chewed through) lead lashed into it. Bit like a tow rope.0

We also use a horse rein
we get ours from a shop duch as Robinsons they are about £3 for a long one and are very strong!

I agree with a lunge line . If you think about it they hold a horse on one end that can be cantering round! Big chunky clip and some are padded with a handle on the other end . I also use a lead rope for a lead, again one of the nice padded ones.0

You know the first thing I thought when I saw the lunge rein?
FANTASTIC IDEA! MY DOG WILL LOVE TIHS!!
Then I had pictures of me trying to reel in a 8 foot lead like a fishing line as my dog becomes a tangled mess.
Back to the drawling board! :rotfl:0 -
You soon get the hang of it
I 'reel' it in as soon as it becomes slack, wrapping the lead around my elbow and palm (i.e. http://www.finehomebuilding.com/CMS/uploadedimages/Images/Homebuilding/Departments/021200bs102-01_med.jpg ), then just letting out more lead as needed. Saves having 8 foot of rope tangling around the dog, or available for the dog to bolt on (learnt the downsides of that the hard way!).
Also, gloves help. I have some lightweight cycling gloves (fingerless, so I can give treats, operate the clicker, lead clip, etc.) I use for summer.

I have a 50ft leash (it's probably a lunge rein) for my dog (bought on eBay). It works better in open spaces because it will catch on twigs and whatnot. Sometimes I call him and wonder why he's not coming...then I realise he's tangled round a tussock. We're now giving a 10ft leash a go when we're in town...because we can keep him close...but give him some extra leash when we find green areas. The 50ft leash was a bit cumbersome in that respect.
I also recommend Kikopup's Youtube channel. Pretty much everything that is good about my dog's behaviour came about after watching her videos (again and again until we got it right). I believe we might even be able to give up the 50ft leash at some point as he's coming on in, er, leaps and bounds. Super-fun-frugal :dance:0 -
Pretend you are a cowboy. You soon pick up how to let out the lunge line and then reel it in and take up the slack! The only other thing is one of those extendible leads that does it for you. The largest one ive seen was about 30 metres and cost £40 ish.0
