James Wellbeloved VS Arden Grange

Hi there
My shihtzu puppy is nearing six months and as she's now becoming picky with her puppy food (guessing boredom as she's had 15kg of the same flavour since birth so understandable) I am looking to change her food in a couple of weeks to a different flavoured junior dry food.
At the moment she's on James Wellbeloved which I nderstand is good but I've also heard good things about Arden Grange.
Has anybody tried both that could recommend one over the other?
Many thanks!

I don't think you will go wrong with either of those as they are very good foods.
We have tried both, and we currently feed our labrador Arden Grange. The only reason for that is that our previous dog got quite constipated on James Wellbeloved, but I think it is down to the individual dog really.
As long as you're not feeding them rubbish like Bakers which is more cereal based that meat, then you can't go too far wrong.
Our labrador got a bit bunged up on the Arden Grange Lamb and Rice flavour but that may be because we didn't switch him over slowly enough. We now stick to Chicken and Rice flavour, and he never seems to get bored (he is a lab though!). Occasionally we add other bits to his food, like left-over chicken or ham, or chopped up egg, or some rice. This gives him a bit of variety on top of his kibble.marlasinger0 -
I looked at AG when I was looking for something for Maisie - she'd been on JWB too and it was fantastic to settle her tum (she has colitis) but is on the expensive side when feeding a big dog.
I was very disappointed to see that the AG has Maize in it - I honestly didn't expect a food with it's reputation ... and price! ... to have it in as it has absolutely no nutritional value to dogs!Grocery Challenge £211/£455 (01/01-31/03)

I would STRONGLY suggest looking at Skinners. I have done quite in depth research into numerous premium dog foods and these are definitely comparable to the top brands if not better than some in regards to ingredients and they are far more reasonably priced.
Their website is http://www.skinnerspetfoods.co.uk. If you contact them they usually send out some free samples to see if your dog likes. I find the cheapest place to buy it is from http://www.vetuk.co.uk/
Hope this helps.0 -

Skinners is excellent (Maisie is now fed their Salmon & Rice) but ONLY the Duck & Rice, Turkey & Rice and Salmon & Rice varieties in their Working Dog section (anyone can buy this though) - their other foods aren't hypoallergenic and contain cereals.Grocery Challenge £211/£455 (01/01-31/03)

Might also be worth having a look at the range from VRD - I'd never heard of them but it was recommended by a breeder I got talking to. Recently got a bag of their salmon & potato variety and it seems excellent. I think it's cheaper than JWB etc (we raw feed but needed to get a bit of weight on, which adding 50g of this every day has done in 3 weeks).

Only available through their webshop here, though http://www.ultimatepetshop.co.uk/0 -
Hi. I used to have 2 Shih Tzus. Little dogs with great characters.
I feed my dog Arden Grange for breakfast and Butchers tinned for dinner.
James Wellbeloved isn't the superb independent company product it used to be. It is now owned by Mars/Pedigree.
At 6 months your pup is ready to go onto adult food and this is why she has lost interest in her dinner. If you are happy with the product you are feeding at the moment and she is doing well on it then it may be easier to just move her onto the adult variety.0 -
We used this website to help us compare dog foods
for our spoodle puppy as the Purina brand the breeder had her on is full of wheat.
http://www.whichdogfood.co.uk/
Having done some research, we went with http://www.uk.edenpetfoods.com/
We tried transferring her over slowly by staying on Purina for the first week, while she settled, then mixing small amounts of Eden in with her Purina. However, from the first mixed meal she carefully picked out and ate all the Eden and left the Purina so we are in no doubt which she prefers! She's had no tummy problems during the change and her poo is firm - thank goodness!
I rang the Eden helpline to ask about feeding it to puppies and they were very helpful. Delivery was very quick too.:j“A journey is best measured in friends, not in miles.”

Tilly is certainly a character and a beautiful one to boot! She is doing well; sturdily built and lovely coat; she's never had any loose poo's on JWB. I plumped for Arden Grange Puppy/Junior in the end as its good for up to 9 months but would you suggest i take it back and just get adult instead? She'll be 6 months in 4th June.
Hmm; I don't want to upset her stomach so hoping to do one change.
Thanks to all for your help and suggestions; really appreciated.0 -
I have two Shih Tzu's which are fed on JWB and find it is excellent food for them.
Though I would recommend the JWB small breed dry food kibble which is easier for small dogs like Shih Tzu's to eat/ digest. It makes the regular food look far too big for their small teeth.I have learned that success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has had to overcome while trying to succeed.
