On your licence it will tell you up to what weight you can tow, failing that you could have a look on the DVLA site. It tells you what all the different codes on your licence actually mean.

Look at the date you passed your test. If it is before 1997 yes you can, the total combination can be upto 8.25 tonnes MAM.

If it is after 1997 you have to cope with the complex rules, but in summary, you can tow a combination up to 3500kg (I think this is MAM for both) provided the MAM of the trailer is less than the unladen weight of the car. (Pre 2013 you can have a MAM for the car of 3500 kg i.e. 110 defender plus a MAM of 750kg on the trailer for a MAM of 4250kgs)

Otherwise you need B+E on your licence

Before 1997 then you can tow upto the cars maximum limit.

    If after 1997...

The gross total for car and caravan must be less than 3500kg. That is the cars gross weight + caravans gross weight = less than 3500kg.

The caravans gross must also be less than the cars UNLADEN kerbweight also.

You can tow more with a medium sized hatch than a large 4x4 because of the gross train weight. = cars max weight + caravans max weight combined.

As above there are exceptions over 3500kg but avoid all that if you can.

I have several versions of that flowchart. Nice and simple way for most people to get the right info.

Just remember if you ever get stopped your not B+E you driving on the B rules.

I printed off the details from the GOV website some time back for my sister. Just in case.
