Is there a chance they think your meter is a metric one and are billing you for cubic metres, not cubic feet? This would result in a much larger bill than expected...

checked on the paper bill i have for Jan, and on the little breakdown bit it says "imperial units" in the equation. And it has the correct meter serial number.

An imperial meter unit is 100 cu ft. Much larger than one cubic metre.

On the facts given, this £1,000 + bill seems to be due to all those Estimated readings that BG said were not worth worrying about, as the readings you gave them were so close - Just how close, is close ?

As you only joined BG last December, look the opening reading you gave them, subtract it from your Final Reading, work out the cost of what you have actually used and subtract it from what you have paid.

BG are partly at fault by issueing an Estimated bill, and then not issueing an accurate bill when they were given actual readings - If paying the amount on the Final Bill is a problem, use BG's laziness to agree a payment plan over time that you can afford

    What update?

Edit: Oh. This one. In post #1:
So the result of the investigation into meter readings has come out and apparently my bill is not £1092.14 in debit.

But in fact £135.25 in CREDIT!

    *round of applause*
