I have close to 2000 songs on my laptop, a selection of songs installed on my laptop when it was given to me, and some song downloaded from mp3 sites that do not charge, and I am thinking of getting an Apple product, ipod or iphone.
Will I be able to have all my music on the Apple device, although the digital rights may not be entirely kosher?

Yeah you will be able to put on 'non-kosher' music along with 'kosher' music on to your ipod etc. Just remember that when in itunes that you need to import all the songs you'd like on to your ipod into itunes.
The easiest way would be to simply highlight all the songs you want on your ipod and drag and drop into itunes and make sure that you sync your itunes playlist to your ipod. Hope this helps.0 -
Yes, download an mp3 to itunes converter http://www.freemake.com/free_audio_converter/:A:dance:1+1+1=1:dance::A

You don't need to run mp3 files through a converter to work on an iPhone etc. They will work fine as they are.0 -
I just remembered that about 250 of these songs were originally copied from a friend's ipod. Will itunes recognize that and stop me from enjoying these files?0

iTunes will have no clue where the songs came from.0

If they were bought from iTunes on a different account then there may be drm on older bought tracks. If they were unprotected tracks just used on a different iPod then it will not matter.
But it is possible that songs bought with a different Apple ID will not play.0 -
It most likely depends on the file format. If it is .mp3 then it'll almost certainly play fine; if it is an Apple format (and it's quite an old file) then there may be issues.0

If it's a m4p file, than you might have issues playing it as they are the old apple DRM files.0

Am I right in thinking you can only add the music to your iDevice library on the Authorized Computer and not from any other? I endlessly get issues here, where the option to Add to Library appears to exist, but when I do it nothing actually happens and no explanation, if I switch computers.
This alone is enough to drive me to to need a reliable Jailbreaking solution or rather have an Android device. PS I pay for all my music!0
