You aren't going to use him again and relationships sound like they have got sour.
If you refuse to pay(I know you are not threatening to do this) then he probably would go to court given the money involved but if you deducted a token amount(say £50) to make you feel better and make your point the chances of him deciding to go to law for that amount would be small.
Given he is being all threatening the temptation not to give the bully all he wants would be too much for me.

All those saying that 4 days pay is fair, if the contractor had gone over on to the 5th day, would you expect to get that day for the price of 4 or expect to pay all 5 days?

There is always a problem with pay per hour jobs, and you should have had a price for the whole job.

However, throwing some maths calculations at the original hours at Post#1, it comes out as this.

    Monday – 8am -12pm, 1pm-4pm (7hrs)
    Tues – 8am-12pm, 1pm – 3pm (6hrs)

    Wed – 8am – 12pm, 1pm – 2pm (5hrs)
    Thus – 8am – 11am. (3hrs)

    £22.86 per hour
    20hrs x £22.86 = £457 Amount Payable (+ Materals)

*Note - You wont pay them for tea breaks, nor for dinner etc.

PS - Whilst he may claim that he was entitled for the full days pay, you could expect him to clean your house/cut the grass/wash the cars etc as you have paid him for his hours.

I think you, like others, are confusing contractor and employee.

Bottom line is that the tradesman delivered a good job at the price he quoted, which the OP was happy to accept.

To be honest don't we all hope to use tradesman that deliver a good job at the stated price?

I'd expect the contractor to take it on the chin. He quoted a price based on 4 days work and that's all I'd expect to pay.

God forbid anyone being pleased if a contractor worked as quickly as possible, did the best ever job possible, and got from under a householders feet as fast as possible.
    I would have been thrilled.
.................:)....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)
