Seen a car, low mileage great nick but ex-motability. Does this impact on a car's value in any way? There are no modifications.

These are ex lease cars which have a guaranteed service history and are generally low mileage due to their use for short trips, hospital/shops etc..

The petrol versions may be OK, but I wouldn't touch a diesel with a barge pole.

The one we are considering is 2012 petrol. I am told that it was reposessed from somebody who was not entitled to a motability car. I tend to believe it as he didn't even need to mention motability at all.

Due to the broad range of people entitled (and in some cases not) to these cars there is no longer a universal answer to say these are good or bad. I have seen some incredible returns (pre workshop and valet) that have clearly been heavily used and abused but shine up not too bad and carry a premium to privateers. Just treat them as any other car and look beyond the service stamps and instant shine.

wouldnt read too much into that, can be many reason why the person had to hand the car back, losing mobility componant of DLA is getting quite common and when PIP is fully rolled out there will be plenty to choose from. the dont genrally get repossessed perse, motability collects upon end of mobility and failed apeals or the customer is given a date to take it back either or.

as for the car? well, all i can say is that the car will most likely have to be taxed at the nearest DVLA office to change the vehicle catagory so ensure they they do this for you its pita when when you get it got to tax at PO and to be told sorry you got to go to DVLA xyz to get the tax and class readjusted.

Have a look underneath, and in the boot/load area.

My ex-motability car has had a wheelchair bouncing around in the boot knocking all the panels, and the underneath had obviously never been cleaned, so all the unprotected components had surface rust.

Yes I thought ex-motability cars were all well looked after and didn't look beyond the price, spec and shine on the paint.

Check the bumpers for signs of accident repair, they do tend to back into things as the restricted mobility driver can't squirm about in the seat to try to look behind

When I've been looking for Motability cars I've found the cars generally fall into two groups with no middle ground:

    (1) They are low mileage and extremely well looked after

    or

    (2) The sills are scuffed to boogery by constant wheelchair/frame/stick access, or the boot sill is scuffed, the boot is filthy from muddy wheelchairs and if they smoke they smoke so much with the windows closed that the car is near unsaleable.

My neighbour has a Motability car, and he does sweet FA to it from one week to the next, and when I say sweet FA I mean he hasn't even opened the bonnet to top up the windscreen washers since he got it.

He used to be reasonably fastidious when he had his own car, but since he qualified as disabled and took the Motability option he simply doesn't care about the car at all.

In short, even though Motability cars see a yearly dealer service, don't take it as gospel that they have been looked after in between times.
Understeer is when you hit a wall with the front of your car
Oversteer is when you hit a wall with the back of your car
Horsepower is how fast your car hits the wall
Torque is how far your car sends the wall across the field once you've hit it

It could be a good buy or the worst car you could ever have.

Car may not actually be driven or even used by the mobility person named.
Dodgy pool cars are sometimes mobility ones. Registered to some scumbags parent or grandparent. Smell the cannabis in them.
At least the engine will have gotten warm. But possibly thrashed in a chase or 2.

Driven 100 yards to the shop and back daily so the engine never warms up = lots of wear to the engine.
Couple of winters back i was at the inlaws and most of the residents have mobility cars. Sitting there ticking over when the people inside waiting for the snow to melt off them.
    Again bad for the engine.

Check the bumpers and wings/mirrors for the paint match and overspray. Parking by ear comes as standard for some.

youll find that 3 year plus cars are auctioned.

ok this scenario, and ive seen this, dealer mechanic thrashes car then bumps car, then dealership paints car, then dealer leases car hiding the fact the delivery miles were thrashed guts out of it, and smacked about a bit needing a litre or two of paint.

car semi damaged from the onset anyway.

there are many scenario's to choose from.

even the most experienced mechanic has owned a bad egg once in his lifetime new or used.

motability do not like owners that exceed service shedules, that dont give a flying to keeping it looking good, motability will remove a car from a lease if they believe that the car is being abused, its usually checked over thoroughly once taken back and what needs doing is done via miandealer parts so it cant be that bad a car.

wifes half brother was named on a astra G motability first week he scuffed a wall, then he managed to split the sump pan a month later, then he side swiped a skip and tore the skin of the rear quarter rear door all well within rapairs, lease was revoked all costs passed onto his old grandmother with terminal cancer, the car was written off just under a year old although it was well within repair motability wrote it off.
