Building and contents renewal for house with cracked walls

My building and contents is due for renewal next month and my renewal premium has come through with about a 10% increase to £587. I would like to get some quotes however I have an ongoing claim with my current insurers - I have a damaged drain which in turn has caused cracking on the front of my house. The claim was first reported eighteen months ago and they still have not fixed it. I share the drain with my next door neighbour (it runs into my property) and theirs is a council house and the council is not prepared to contribute to the repairs. I think we are at the stage where the insurers are going to go ahead with the work (they have been monitoring it for eighteen months and it is not moving).

So where do I go for a new quote? Will other insurers even consider it? Is the damage classed as "subsidence, landslip or heave"? My current insurer have classed the damage as "damage to water works" which means I only have to pay an excess of £50 instead of £1000 for subsidence, landslip or heave.

I have been with my current insurers for 8 years, and during that time i have made one claim on the contents (about 7 years ago - accidental damage to a video recorder, when they were about £150!!), and two claims on the buildings - the one above and some storm damage to a few roof tiles a couple of months ago. Despite that they are still giving me 3 years no claims discount.

Any advice?

  • I would have thought that a 10% increase was reasonable but there is nothing stopping you shopping around. You will obviously have to declare your claims history which will influence any premium. If I were you I would stay with your current insurer until the claim is sorted.
