Hepa vacuum cleaner recommendations?

I've described my disappointment with bagless cleaners before, but it's still worth saying it again, they're not a good choice for someone with dust allergies. I have a dust mite allergy and found my dyson made it a lot worse. Well, initially it was fine during vacuuming, but the problems came with emptying it. The dust is very hard to contain while emptying and it isn't just a matter of tipping it out, I found that the dust container and generally inside the cleaner (including hard to reach areas) became clogged up with compacted fine dust and required manual removal of the dust by scraping and banging. This isn't something someone with dust allergies should be doing.
Without cleaning it out however, it just didn't vacuum very well. Over time, it wasn't even good during vacuuming, I think the air flow had started to find alternate paths and dusty air was coming out without being filtered. It's not surprising that a high power motor and complex air path through restrictive filters didn't hold up long term. I'm back using my ancient 1970s electrolux paper bag cleaner and it's working better for me. It doesn't get dirty inside, ever, and everything stays inside the paper bag for easy disposal. The secondary filter doesn't need much attention, the paper bag does most the work. Even without allergies, it's a much simpler to use machine with no need to clean out the inside or take it apart to find blockages inside all the little pipes, as it simply doesn't have little pipes to block up.0 -
I have both Dyson and Miele cleaners and while Dyson cleaning is excellent (and their ability to not lose suction is an excellent idea), their quality is not a patch on Miele. In 10 years the Miele is still going strong. The Dyson has already had 3 replacement parts under warranty.
I wouldn't buy another Dyson. We’ve had to remove your signature. Please check the Forum Rules if you’re unsure why it’s been removed and, if still unsure, email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Another vote for the Miele Dog and Cat, I have two one on each floor and they are brilliant, I have had a Dyson Animal and would echo the comments about emptying it, bags every time!!0
