hole

I came home from work tonight to find a large hole has been dug in the pedestrian pathway joining my lawn and large amounts of earth around it. The people that dug it had gone. There is a barrier around it that is encrouching on to my driveway so that i can't drive into my driveway, and also the barriers are on my lawn. I'm not sure which utility has dug this hole but I'm guessing that it is electric as at the bottom of the hole is an insulated cable leading to a lampost
This isn't the end of the world as we know it! but aren't they meant to put a note through your letterbox to let you know whats going on?

Your Council will probably be able to tell you which utility is responsible then you can get on to them to ask when it will be finished. I hope they make good to your lawn etc. Maybe take photos in case there's any dispute. I guess expecting the courtesy of a note through the door was too much to ask. Sadly they wouldn't have given you a second thought.

What is the name of the company on the barriers or signage around it? If it was for a gas emergency, you would not get any warning at all as no crystal balls. I believe if water emergency they work a little different dependent on problem as less likely to be risk to life or property.

There are a lot of pipes and cables underground, so does not automatically mean electrical works because you can see a cable. But there should be signage if it is water. gas or electrical -

It's not gas as we don't have it in the village, the barriers are balfour beatty. There are signs but they are just directing pedestrians off the path and into the road.

oh well I'll soon find out when they come back today....if they come back today!

Its sounds like it is probably electric (Have any of the streetlights in the area not been working?), don't expect them back today. What happens is this - the streetlight owner reports the fault to the DNO, the DNO sends out a digging team to dig the cable up, after the cable is dug up the DNO will send a jointing team out to do the repair and once the repair is accomplished they will send the digging team back out to reinstate. I expect they will be back on Monday now to reinstate.

If you are unhappy with anything they have done, telephone the DNO.

District Network Operator-the company that supplies your electricity, as shown on your bill (not you actual billing company).

Sorry DNO stands for Distribution Network Operator, these are the companies that maintain the wires and substations basically. If you are in the old SWALEC, SWEB, or MEB patches it will be Western Power Distribution. If London or South East, it will be UK Power Networks, the remaining bit in the South is Southern Electric. The North of the country I'm not sure of.
