MSE's 50% SKY RIPOFF

Options
The kids had been pestering me to get Sky (never had subscription TV before) and when I got the MSE email on 12th September 2012 I bagged one of the codes along with a college who was sitting next to me:

w w w . moneysavingexpert.com/tips/12-09-2012/

We both duly signed up with our codes applied and have been enjoying 50% Sky for the last 12 months - but mine has now gone up to full price after 6 months and his hasn't!

I just got off the phone with Sky trying to sort it out, but they won't honour the offer or apply any other discount. They deny that their system tells them anything about how I came to sign up other that I'm only entitled to 6 months discount.

Can the MSE sort this out for me or I'm I going to be left with a £129.00 bad taste in my mouth for the next six months?

If so, don't bother advertising discounts that are nothing but a sham.

No use posting here. This is just a forum; we're not employees.

You will have received a "Welcome letter" at the start of your subscription detailing what you would pay (and for how long). If you still have this and it confirms your assertion that you got a year- long half price offer then you should send a copy of this to Sky along with a written complaint.
I don't see how MSE can help here, your dispute is with Sky.

You may wish to read the Sky Customer Complaints Code of Practice as you have rights to complain to an ombudsman if you are not satisfied with how Sky address a complaint.

In my view, it's best made by letter (recorded!), enclosing copies of any evidence that you have, and tell Sky that you want them to treat your complaint in accordance with their Code of Practice, so that they are aware that you are familiar with your rights.

Others have complained about codes not being applied/being applied incorrectly, on the Sky forum, which Sky staff monitor. See, for example, http://helpforum.sky.com/t5/Billing-Payments/New-customer-MSE-50-discount-on-sky-tv-and-broadband-not-applied/m-p/950960
  • Did you read what you signed up to ?? I suspect that you didn't .......

I took a Sky 50% offer last Xmas - it clearly said 6 months, and it was necessary to cancel (if you wanted to !) after 5 months to give the 30 days notice to stay within the 6 month period. Just cancelled, had an email from Sky telling me when my payments will go back to "normal".

I have been with Sky for years and have taken up a number of their free/50% offers on movies/sport/etc - never had a problem. They make the rules for these offers, if you don't read them.....................

All, the replies so far are not technically wrong, but we seem to be ignoring the original point - seemingly two people used the same offer at the same time and got different results. There could be a few reasons.

Working out what happened there may be difficult unfortunately, the best I think you can do is look out your original paperwork, and if necessary, ask Sky to check their call recordings as well.

    Good luck.

Your pal may have taken a different package or commitment that accounts for the pricing anomaly, but these deals rarely provide the discounted rate for the duration, it is always a teaser - 6 months on a 12/18 month commitment is usual. Your welcome letter will have stipulated the terms.

    What does it say?
  • I got a 50% off for 12 months code and followed the link instructions exactly. Even the Sky agent who phoned me to follow up the online order (which I screenshotted) said he could see the 50% off for 12 months.

I've just had an email from Sky saying they are going to charge me full price! I've contacted MSE and Sky to report this and await their response...

    Not good!

    Hi timimjohnson
Are you the poster on the Sky forum?

    If I've understood it correctly:

    • Sky provided MSE with discount codes to use on the Sky website.
    • Sky's response (on their forum) is:
As you have been given an offer through a third party company selling Sky on our behalf this offer is through their website and not ours so we are unable to apply this deal. .... [Money Saving Expert ] will need to honour this ....

    http://helpforum.sky.com/t5/Billing-Payments/Why-is-my-50-discount-not-showing-on-my-first-bill-I-have-just/td-p/1109384

There's a cache (as it was on 11/5/13) of the MSE page (which has subsequently changed) at:

    http://cc.bingj.com/cache.aspx?q=http%3a%2f%2fwww.moneysavingexpert.com%2fshopping%2fcheaper-sky-cheap-cable&d=5003564838159362&mkt=en-GB&setlang=en-GB&w=93PoGNQS7GjjW7R7R94_ye79kLZsSuKN

    Note,
What if I have any problems?
If you have any problems using your code or getting the M&S voucher, please contact Sky first on 08442 411818.
If you can't get your issue resolved with Sky, then you might have to consider the formal approach outlined in the Sky Customer Complaints Code of Practice which would enable you eventually to complain to Sky's ombudsman.

Have you saved the Sky email(s) - mine was headed 'Confirmation of your payment details' and was the 3rd or 4th email I received shortly after signing up. It details the payment dates and amounts - mine clearly says discounted amount for 12 months.
  • Just managed to get this matter resolved by emailing Sky's CEO, Jeremy Darroch.

A very helpful lady from Sky's Executive Support Team phoned me back and has corrected the situation with the code not being correctly applied. She also has re-started my 12 month contract from today and has given me the half a month of service I've had since 30th for free as a way of apology.

I also had a reply from Becca at MSE but had already managed to resolve the matter with Sky.

    Thanks all,

    Tim
