As others have said - do NOT give them a deposit. Post dating a cheque is meaningless, most banks will cash it immediately anyway.

Also, the legislation surrounding cheques is very much in favour of the recipient of the cheque. Even if they rip you off and do no work, if you cancel the cheque they can pursue you through the courts purely on the basis of "Leven gave me this cheque - it bounced" and they will almost certainly win. Your claims that they are ripping you off will result in you being told to take them to court to recover the money.

You could have stopped there. Don't give them any money.

Isn't there a 7 day cooling off period for work agreed with cold callers?

Might worth knowing this in case they get difficult when you cancel.

And you are going to cancel now aren't you?

Don't have anything to do with cold callers. Genuine firms who do good work at reasonable prices don't cold call. They get work from personal recommendations/word of mouth.

Thanks to everyone for your advice.

Luckily, we had not signed anything, so no problem cancelling.

I sent them an email telling them we were not going ahead and they came back with an improved offer with no deposit! Needless to say, I won't be taking up the offer..

I don't know what I was thinking of - no wonder vulnerable people get sucked into these things. They may well have been genuine, but if so, they need to address all of the things that put me off and started alarm bells ringing (albeit belatedly!).
