redundancy

Options
My dad is a caretaker of a school and has been for the last 15 years, he is 60 and has been told today he is to be made redundant. He has a consultation meeting on tuesday and wants me to go with him. Can anyone help advise me what to expect and what questions we should be asking

Any help would be really appreciated

Will they let you go with him?

Often it's only a work colleague or union rep allowed

Yes, this happened to me and I had to find a work colleague instead.

I would hugely recommend taking someone in though - it stopped me being bullied, and made them go through due process. I ended up getting a much better offer as a result.

In that case go in and listen. take notes. both of you try to say as little as possible. ask for time out if your dad starts to get upset.

    ask about early retirement options.
note down especially if they say they are happy with his performance

is he one of a team? if so, ask what the selection criteria are
search the acas site - there were some good questions on there

Thank you for the good advice. Yes he is the only one in this role so the only one up for redundancy.

Do you know what sort of early retirement options they may offer?

Is he a member of the local government pension scheme? I believe that it may be possible for immediate payment of pension without deduction for retiring early - but the school or local authority would probably have to pay.

Is the school in local government control - in which case his contract is likely with the local authority. Or is it an academy (in which case his contract is likely with the school). If the local authority they may be more used to doing early retirement.
