Broken bleeding toenail

I noticed my poor pooch has broken a toe nail. Its about 2/3 way down and its broken to the point where the quick is exposed. The nail is still dangling on. It was bleeding earlier but has now stopped. Its just looks very sore and raw! Whats the best course of action? He is acting well (just stole some spare ribs from downstairs) but he doesnt want us to touch his paw (understandably!)

Bathe in salt water, and go to vets for treatment. My spaniel ripped one out completely, it was the only time she she ever gave me the 'mum, it hurts' look.Good enough is good enough, and I am more than good enough!:j
If all else fails, remember, keep calm and hug a spaniel!0 -
One of my boys had a broken toenail that wouldn't heal and eventually became infected and, after trying to treat it with antibiotics & steroid cream, the entire toe had to be removed. Get it sorted asap to avoid this happening to your lad. It may just need a simple remedy to sort out, but better to be safe than sorry.
Hope he gets well soon.Nice to save.0 -
Oh dear - was just about to start a topic on that as Zara managed exactly the same with hers...
How much salt with how much water?
Thanks a lot0 -
Not too much, or they go running round the room on 3 legs and you feel like a very bad mummy indeed. I'll see if I can find the amounts.
Edit - it's about a teaspoon to a pint. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -
Bathe as others have said and keep clean......bit of a tip for bleeding nails - Dip the nail in flour. If concerned i'd take a trip to the vets.0
