Help...been paying insurance twice for 12 months!

Options
Hi all.

Major c*ck up!

I pay my car insurance monthly by DD, and it renews in May. I changed cars last June and my then insurer (Aviva), wanted too much of an increase for the new car so I cancelled the insurance verbally over the phone and took out new insurance with another company (Allianz), but forgot to cancel the DD for the Aviva insurance.

I have just recieved a renewal notice for Aviva and in my confusion, I thought it was for Allianz (similar name) and as it was quite pricey I rang and cancelled the renewal and took out new insurance with the Coop. I then recieved another renewal from Allianz, and checked my bank account and realised I had been paying for both since last June!

I did not notice the Aviva DD was still being taken out because it is under a different name (yourcover) on my bank statement and I just thought it was one of my other insurances.

I am now out of pocket to the tune of about £400. I have not rang Aviva yet, as I assume it would be just my word against theirs that I cancelled last June, particularly as I cancelled again just now (thinking they were Allianz).

If Aviva do not agree to reimburse, then what do you think my chances are of recieving the money back from the bank through the DD guarentee, bearing in mind I have no written proof that i cancelled last June?

Not that it makes any difference, but my wife has been very ill on and off this last year, which is probably why I made the mistakes.

Any adice grateful, thanks.

Olias

Ring Aviva and explain, it may be simply resolved.

Oh dear, I am surprised they even allowed you to do this as normally it would flag up that you have cover on the vehicle to prevent you double insuring a vehicle.

Unfortunately as you say I cant see you getting anything back unless they feel compassion for your in your specific case.

Though one saving grace for you is all calls have to be recorded in the insurance industry so if you ask them to check their recording of your conversation you may get lucky.

What's your basis of saying all calls in the insurance industry have to be recorded?

Dual insurance happens all the time, it is not illegal/unlawful. The majority of the time one insurer would request proof of the other policy in force and then refund after deducting an admin fee. Due to the RTA they should ask you to return the certificate before cancelling their policy.

As far as I know it's a requirement of the FSA to help in dispute cases, I maybe wrong but that was my understanding of it.

    I think you are wrong.

The usual message is 'calls may be recorded ....'.

Just wanted to offer sympathy really Olias. If it makes you feel better I discovered I'd been paying a maintenance contract on a freezer which was 15 years old, we'd paid more out than the thing cost in the first place. Did, however, get it all back, hope you have the same luck :)

Hi all, and thanks for your comments.

Well after lots of calls and lots of wailing and knashing of teeth, Aviva have (sort of) admitted it was their fault - something to do with a cancellation charge that should have been actioned prior to the cancellation, but for some reason wasn't.

Long story short, they have agreed to refund £322 (amount overpaid minus a £59 admin fee). I am really happy with that, as there was oversight on my part too.

    Thanks again for your comments.

    That's good news.

So you are now with the co-op. Did you actually tell Allianz you aren't renewing?
