Waiting till the end of energy contract or switch a month before

I'm due to come out of my scottish power contract on 31 July and want to switch. I'm aware it can take a couple of months sometimes.
If I switch now can I specify a date when I want the new supplier to take over I.e the day after my cheap contract ends.
Or will I have to wait until the day I come out of contract before switching.?

Thinking about moving to spark energy, I know they don't have the best CS but they work out £90 cheaper.

Hi Jaks101 If your contract has cancellation charges and you switch early these will apply. If you wait until about a couple of weeks before the end of the deal to make your switch we should get the request at about the time the deal ends. If you want specific advice please e-mail us at social@scottishpower.com Thanks David

No you can't specify a date. You will be fine to start a switch after about 7/7, as a switch takes 4-5 weeks.

Probably best to wait till the end of your contract. Although companies promise an easy switch over, plenty of times things go wrong! It's best to wait, especially if your contract does have a cancelation fee, and then do a comparisson based on your exact annual usage to get the best supplier, tariff.

All or almost all energy contracts have a 28 day notice period so it should be perfectly safe to initiate a switch 28 days before the end of your contract. Do check your T&Cs though. I don't see why you should have to wait until the end of the contract and then spend a month or two on your current providers expensive standard rates.

£90 is nothing, I wouldn't go with Spark Energy unless they were £900 cheaper.

+1 (from family experience - don't touch them with a barge pole)

I had one switch take place on the 21st day so definitely would not advise that 28 days will be safe.

Switching normally takes 4-6 weeks however it can sometimes take less time than that so it's worth waiting just to be certain.

I'm always dubious about companies that say they can offer me big savings as well, especially one that isn't known for its good customer service.

I think if you cancel the contract before time then you have to pay the penalty and so if you are agree to pay the penalty then you should cancel the contract.
