10 year old British Gas refund

I took Gas & Electricity from British Gas at a previous property back in 2003, I have not been with British Gas since then. Today I received a letter saying after completing an audit 'we may owe you some money - please get in touch as soon as you can'. I'm always meticulous about keeping on top of direct debits, cancelling old direct debits, not getting too much in credit with utility companies, and getting refunds when I move home or switch providers - however they say they owe me £120 & are sending a cheque! Nice surprise on top of my recent unexpected successfull £5300 PPI claim :) Wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience? When I first received the letter I was suspicious that it might be a scam, but I only had to confirm the ref number on the letter, my current address and the address I lived at during the time period that they said they owed me money from.

    Welcome to the forum.

Still sounds like a scam! Was it an 0900 number?

Have you tried to ring a British Gas number you obtained on-line to check?

If it's any help, around 4 or 5 weeks ago I also got a letter from British Gas worded much in the same style. I didn't have to call them though as they'd attached a cheque for just under £40. They explained that during an audit they found they'd overcharged me since 2010 for part of my monthly Homecare 400 service.

    I'm still suspicious.

It may be worth both of you calling British Gas on 0800 048 0202. Don't take my word that this number is true, please check on their website for this phone number (I have not included a link, as it can be modified to look genuine)
