i have just bought a cat c write-off van for work from a private seller. the owner crashed the van himself and the insurance paid him out. he had the chance of keeping the van for free, which he did. i have fixed the van which is now as good as new. the seller gave me all the documents i.e., mot, which runs till december and its taxed till july. we filled in the logbook as normal which i am still waiting for from dvla. my question is can i use the van now? or do i need to do anything else? many thanks.

As it has been a Cat C you will need to undergo a VOSA identity check and then the vehicle will need to be re-MOT'd. Also as the vehicle has been written off it usually becomes the property of the insurance company so you may have to apply for the log book in your name from the dvla.

before the MOT you need to have the VIC check. You would need to speak to VOSA about regualtions on driving it there.
