Installing Microsoft Money onto new laptop - not working

I suspect that's what was intended. :)

I have tried to download this from the link mentioned but I still can't get Money to run. I've tried using further links from the same website regarding a patch but that hasn't worked.

I'm not very computer literate at the best of times & I'm struggling with Windows 8 so it is probably user error....

I have downloaded the Money application as it has appeared in my download list as Money2005-UK-QFE2 & I've tried uninstalling it (successful) & re-downloading (same problem). I keep going round in circles whereby Money tells me it is installing (after I've clicked the I agree box on the licence agreement) & all I need to do is click Finish to end installation, but on doing this nothing seems to happen & I can't "find" it anywhere!

I've tried using the Programme Compatibility Checker which has helpfully told me the Money programme is incompatible, but then suggests things I don't understand so I'm reluctant to try. Other people appear to have got this free download to work with Windows 8.

Any ideas how I can get the darn programme to run?

Or can I transfer the old Money files from my old laptop to my new one? Assume I can if I know what filenames I'm looking for... I've not had much luck in doing so yet.

Thanks in advance
& as for some happy ending I'd rather stay single & thin :D

Sorry, not a Windows 8 user but this might help.

If I've understood correctly it seems to install but then you 'can't find it' from which I presume no desktop shortcut was created.

Use Windows Explorer to find the directory in Programme Files where it installed. Look for the .exe file that should launch the programme and right click on it.

Hopefully you should have a drop-down menu which offers a 'Troubleshoot Compatibility' entry or similar. Select that and when prompted, choose Windows XP as the last programme it successfully ran in.

Now double click the .exe file and see if it launches the programme.

Of course you can export your data files from the old laptop; export will be one of the options available on the menu. But you still need to install the new version to reimport the data.
You can't just 'copy the application over', if that's what you mean.

What I thought I could do was copy whatever files are needed to make Money work/run (haven't a clue what they might be called) from my old laptop onto a thumb stick & then copy them from there onto my new laptop. Then I could restore my most recently backed up Money working file so I wouldn't lose any data. Or does it not work like that?

I'm a total novice at sorting out problems & miss my disc drive... Thanks.

No, you can't copy program files over. You must install the required program onto your new laptop, and then import the data files. Program and data files are two different things.
If you could do what you suggest then anyone could copy the software.
However MM 2005 is not 'officially' compatible with W8 and of course support for MM ended nearly 4 years ago now. So probably time to upgrade.

Thank you - that is the problem I was trying to explain.

This has all been down to user error on my part, & I'm developing a strong loathing for Windows 8 in the process. To me it is very, very different from XP & Vista :D

I have stumbled upon a Money icon somewhere in a screen of gazillions of other icons (not sure if its a new shiny version of Windows Explorer) & clicking on that has got it open & running, & I've successfully restored my previous working file so everything is lovely - just hope I can find it all next time.

I did try clicking on the .exe file from my downloads list & did try various versions of windows with the Troubleshoot compatibility, including XP so I'm a bit baffled as to what went wrong.....but so glad it has as I have over 10 years of accounts & I still love Money.

Thanks for your help - I'm so glad these forums exist!

Thanks for explaining - I did wonder if that could be the case but I know nothing about the mechanics of computers at all. So annoyed that I didn't think to check if my new notebook had a disc drive (never occurred to me that it wouldn't) or I'd have bee up & running within minutes using my old MM disc.

I did know that support had stopped for MM some time ago - but I can report that it is working fine with Windows 8 :T

I'm sure you are right that it is time to upgrade - but I'll need a good few months to get used to Windows 8.

Your new notebook wouldn't work at all if it didn't have a disk drive (hard drive). I think you mean an optical drive (DVD/CD drive)? In the absence of an optical drive, you can either a) use an external USB DVD drive, or b) copy any required disks from DVD to a USB flash drive on another device and install from that.

Ha ha :rotfl:- really showing my ignorance of all things computer, aren't I?

You are quite right - I did mean I don't have an optical drive. The problem I've been having is my old laptop has developed a few problems since my DS installed a game on it. Since uninstalled said game but problems persist, & regular virus/malware scans haven't revealed a cause.

Problems include the many keys on the keyboard not working (but not all) so I have a spare USB keyboard. The optical drive will play CDs but not DVDs anymore, trying to watch iplayer etc. online is impossible as the picture keeps pausing & jumping (not my connection as new notebook is fine).

I'm planning to transfer "stuff" to new notebook before completely wiping & reinstalling original software that came with old laptop (have recovery disc etc.) as I'm wondering if there is just too much on the laptop & it can't cope so just "falls over" on a regular basis...Sure there is a more technical term than this!

Just wondering if there is a quick way of transferring lots of photos & music onto a USB (as I'm losing the will at the moment).
