parquet flooring

Options
My daughter has just moved into a 1970s house and is considering whether to 'save' the parquet flooring in the lounge. There are little holes around the edge where gripper rod has been but otherwise condition of the wood isn't too bad. The worse thing is the part of the floor is very bleached by the sun so there are two colours of floor.

My daughter doesn't actually want it to be as dark as its original colour and I don't know to what extent you can change original colour

We have heard that you can, when it is restored, have it oiled or varnished, but the guy who put some wood floor down elsewhere in house has said that if its varnished it needs four coats which must be expensive as person who did the restoring would have to keep coming back. However I think that if it isn't varnished it could be a lot of work keeping it nice especially as in a year or two they will start a family

Any ideas on cost and best way forward would be much appreciated.

I was researching this very thing earlier this evening. Was pleasantly surprised by the price estimates given by this London based company's website:

Btw I have no affiliation with this company and have never used their services, was just pleased to find a website with detailed rates!

I've had the original parquet floors restored in my 1912 house. The blocks are pitch pine but were a dark brown colour due to the varnish used. The sanded floors have been treated with this, http://woodfinishes.co/collections/bona/products/bona-mega, and over 2 years on the original finish is still fine, although I'll probably apply another coat to the hall this year.

As an example of price, my 19' x 17' lounge was around £750. I was extremely happy with the company, http://www.amcwoodfinishers.co.uk/, if your daughter's house is in Essex.

I have no affiliation to either of the links above, just a happy customer :)
