Ordering a part or full kitchen and then having it adapted to better suit your needs cannot be construed as being dishonest.

That was my suggestion for the OP to research and mull over.

Comments re fitting are pointless as the Op stated that father and son would undertake that task.

It depends on what OP is considering for units and doors etc as to whether mixing off shelf units and bespoke made ones will work, fine for standard melamine units not so much if they're looking at solid wood or veneer.
I'd also agree that getting an independent designer in is a good idea, they'll spend more time on the design and generally come up with better solutions, as someone also said you may find companies who build the kitchen that off set the cost of the design should you go with them, this is what I personally do, I have a designer go in with the client and sort out the plans, I quote for making the units and if client goes ahead then design is included as such, if they decide on another quote then the design cost is invoiced to them.
  • We had our kitchen made and fitted late last year. We went to DIY major stores to get prices but found the handmade one from a local was much better. They can fill the gaps if you have any by making bigger/smaller cabinets. We choose a hand painted one. I love it.
Loved our trip to the West Coast USA. Death Valley is the place to go!
