I need to get some malaria tablets for me and my g/f.
Off to the DM for 2 weeks at the end of july, my understanding is there are different types of tablets you can get.
After doing some googleing CHLOROQUINE / AVLOCLOR tablets seem to be ok for the DM.
Can someone please confirm that these would be safe to take or would we need stronger ones like malarone or lariam

check with your GP - they will have the most up to date information. it's not necessarily about malarone being stronger, it's about what type of malaria is out there and what is the most effective drug to combat it. there is also the option of doxycyline, but that is rarely prescribed in the UK.
when i last got chloroquine and paludrine (sp?) (same as avolcor) i needed a private prescription from a doctor to buy it anyway.:happyhear0 -
There are many trusted UK sites you can get avolcor from without prescription.
I will ask the doc when i go for my jabs0 -
I actually thought that the Dominican Republic was malaria-free, so check carefully whether you need it.0

All travelers to malaria-risk areas in Haiti and the Dominican Republic, including infants, children, and former residents of these islands, should take an antimalarial drug. All travelers to Haiti are at risk for malaria, except no risk in the cruise port of Labadee (Labadie).
Travelers to rural areas of the Dominican Republic are at risk for malaria, with the highest risk in provinces bordering Haiti. In addition, risk in all areas of La Altagracia Province, including Punta Cana and Bavaro Beach (Permanent October 21, 2005). Travelers to malaria-risk areas in Haiti and Dominican Republic should take chloroquine to prevent malaria. Travelers who stay overnight in Kingston, Jamaica, should take chloroquine to prevent malaria. This recommendation is expected to be temporary. (Updated December 4, 2006)

Still loved, still missed and very dear

I am going next weds, and went last year at same time.
I have been advised on both occasions by the practice nurse to take anti malaria tablets.
Last time we took avolcor, and I am taking this one again.
Was told the risk was only slight, but not worth taking the risk considering the consequences.

You will need anti-malarials for Dominican Republic, but they are not needed for Dominica. You can get all the information you require and you can even order Chloroquine/Avloclor without prescription from this site:

I've just received my order for Malarone from them. Though Malarone is expensive and it does require a prescription.0
