Probably one of the most studied problems in computer science.

The above are great for two point journeys but I was lookking for one for an optimum route between five points eg a,b,c,d,e

Would it better do to travel as : a......c.......b......d.......e

    or via: a......b.........c.......e..............d

Mind you all your efforts at route optimization , can be thwarted by the bell end who is never quite ready when you arrive to pick them up.

a map, a ruler, string, and someone with a good understand of maps...

Or Google maps if you're not a geek like me...
  • So, i just googled 'travelling salesman' and 'google maps' then found this:

    http://gebweb.net/optimap/ and http://www.tsp.gatech.edu/maps/

The first one is the nicer of the two as it lets you pop postcodes in

I would have thought start at a..end at Furthest house e and add waypoints (or Via's) for those in between, then work as final destination. But then as soon as you start you know your local council is going to dig up some roads and put diversions and temporary traffic lights in, so five members of staff late on the first morning of your car share.. :D
