Your wants or don't wants don't really come into it. If taking a lodger enables you to stay in the house, then that is what you have to do, in the absence of any other way of getting money into the house. At some stage in life facts, however unpalatable, must be faced.

Don't you think I know this. Trouble is the ex seems to get all he wants and I'm left fighting for not just what I want but what I need.

I'm a bit angry  at being left in this situation - who wouldn't be, I have been to court several times and he never turns up. He's walked away from the debts and the companies don't care as long as they can get hold of me for their money. The mortgage provider understands to a certain point but are tied by rules and have to 'protect' his interest, so you see I want to stay in my home and am only doing what I can to hopefully be able to. Twice I have struggled with the payments and been saved from the brink of repossession. It's so unfair that there is no help or support for people in this situation unless I actually become homeless :(

I've been in exactly the same position - the eviction note from the bailiffs arrived two weeks after my husband walked out - I had no idea that there had even been a court hearing for arrears.

I couldn't sell as there was little capital in the property, I would never have got another mortgage and rents were high. I also had two young children.

The only way I could manage was taking in a lodger. I know you don't want to, but there are a lot of people having to do that now, and a lot of people looking. You can rent a room for around £80 per week without having to pay tax on it. It's not nice having a stranger in your home, but as long as you vet carefully, it could actually work really well. I'm still friendly with some of my ex lodgers.

If you could pay off the arrears (with the help of a lodger) you could then approach your bank to extend the mortgage and bring down your payments.

I too was angry and upset, not to mention the stress and fear of losing your home. But just wanted to say there is a way forward and although not easy, you can put this behind you in time.

I would love to increase my income - wanna tell my boss for me!!

Your currently only working 30 hours - can you increase to 37-40 ? What difference will that make to your income ?

If you can't increase the hours in your current job what's stopping you applying for a full time job elsewhere ? Can you get another part time job for the few extra hours per week ?

Many years ago when in the same position as you I had three jobs on the go at the same time - it can be done.

    Good luck.

I have a lodger who has been with me for over 2 years . Would it be so bad if it allowed you to keep your home ?
