Nursing home getting dual registration-help!

Sorry-this might get long.

My Grandad is 85 years old, he is partially sighted i.e. being blind in one eye, and has limited sight in the other, he also has limited mobility and sometimes on a good day uses a rolator. He is in a nursing home.

Recently a few patients have been accepted on an EMI basis, the NH has apparently paid for dual registration as nursing/emi.

There are a few patients that have been deemed suitable for a EMI, a few of those are ‘wanderers’ and have been in found in rooms that aren’t their own, My mother has complained about this as she is concerned that the ‘wanderers’ might come into My Grandad’s room and upset him, they have been in lots of people’s room and the staff don’t seem to be able to control the situation. My mother was told that my Grandad has to keep his room closed or he owner has a list of alternative nursing homes for him to go to. My mum was gob smacked about how callas he put it.

I don’t even know what I am asking; I am really upset and worried about my Grandad. Where him and my mum live is a really small place with only 3 nursing homes so they basically have a monopoly and don’t have to worry about the people who are already
Oh....I'm not going to lie to you......At the end of the day, when alls said and done......do you know what I mean.........TIDY

Hi I can understand why your grandfather is upset. I used to run a centre for the elderly that had dementia and related illnesses and had full training and understanding of the condition.

I think that you will find that this is a problem with most homes either nursing or residential. Homes are desperate for the clients so they tend to get any client they can to occupy their beds and also EMI attract a higher fee then what your grandfather is paying, this is probably why they are being callous.

I think your grandfather has to think what he would like to do. He could ask for a lock for his door and preventing wanderers entering his private space or move to another home where there may be the same problem. He probably should consult with his social worker/services to discuss his options.

Good luck with this problem hope you get it sorted

All residents doors should have a lock and residents should be offered their own keys. This is CSCI inspectorate guidance (government organisation which inspects all homes on a regular basis).
His own key will prevent other people wandering into his room, and all staff should have a master key so they can get in if he buzzes for them.
If your grandad has a social worker, demand a care review so this can be discussed and sorted out. It's rare, but not unknown, for confused residents to assault other residents, so you might want to ask for a risk assessment.
Increasingly, homes are going for dual registration so even if your grandad moved to another residential home it might also become dual registered and he'd be back to square one.
If you're unhappy with anything and it can't be resolved through discussion with the home, put it in writing as CSCI see all letters of complaint. CSCI are more than happy to talk to anyone who has concerns about the home their relative lives in. HTH and best wishes.

Thank you both, My mum has spoken to the local nursing home inspectorate, the lady she spoke to was very nice and understanding. She has stated that if the nursing home is granted emi status, it has to be because the patients are seperate and that they have to have seperate trained staff. My mother told her about the door/finding a new nursing home thing and they are now planning to inspect this home a little earlier. They were very interested that they have EMI patients there when they have applied but not been granted with a licence(thats not to say they will either).

My mum also told me that one of the wanderers (male) was found in one of the female patients room and is really upset, so I think they might have a few complaints.

Fingers crossed, feel much better Thank you

Good to hear the problems are being addressed. Sometimes CSCI misses things during their inspections but they always welcome information from residents and relatives.
Did you know that inspection reports are posted on theCSCI website? The reports contain issues the inspectorate have asked the home to address/fix and although the reports are available to read at the home on request, it can be easier to read them in the comfort of your own home.
