Cancelling at end of policy

Hi there, I'm looking for some advice.
I have car insurance with Swinton. I have paid for a full years insurance and my policy ends in 4 weeks.
Last week the head gasket went on my car and I got rid of it.
I phoned Swinton to get a quote for a new car I was thinking of buying. The best price they could give me was £600. This seemed a lot so I told them I would get back to them. They informed me if I cancelled the policy I would have to pay a £50 cancellation charge.
After visiting comparison websites I received much cheaper quotes of £250 - including one from Swinton!
I'm not sure where to go from here. I still haven't got a replacement vehicle and I don't want to stay with Swinton but I begrudge paying a cancellation fee so close to the end of the policy when I have paid for the year in full.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Bear in mind that if you cancel then no ncd will be earned for the current year.
And unless you cancel you will have nil ncd to use on any new policy.
May be cheaper overall to bite the bullet and change over to the new car till your policy expires, then you can shop around with all your ncd.0 -
Probably cheaper to let the old insurance expire, informing them you do not wish to renew for a following year than to convert the insurance to the new car or terminate existing insurance with four weeks remaining.Everything has its beauty but not everyone sees it.0
