Just thought I'd update this for a bit of closure - thanks to everyone who replied.
I did select the guaranteed delivery option, and I've done a lot of online shopping and never seen a site be so explicit about the delivery being guaranteed (rather than just on a best effort basis).
However, taking into consideration the effort it would involve and putting aside 'principles' I'd decided to just suck up the loss. I posted the obligatory tweet saying how appalled I was with their customer service and left it at that.
I've just discovered they refunded me a week ago... they just didn't bother to tell me (checked junk mail etc).
So a nice end to the story - but thanks to everyone for their advice.0
