When you apply for private rented accommodation, you will almost certainly be credit checked. This will reveal your employment status and income, so the potential LL would know whether you could afford the rent from your income and/or savings.

No credit check shows up income and savings.
The Op already has somewhere to live they just need to claim LHA and whatever benefits they are entitled to.
Mama read so much about the dangers of drinking alcohol and eating chocolate that she immediately gave up reading.

OP, have you looked into what benefits and financial help you can get? You may not needs to move at all, but just apply for benefits, carry on paying your rent with that payment to help you and stay hwere you are.

Have a look at this site:

    http://www.entitledto.co.uk/

and use the benefits calculator (be honest with the info you use), to see what you should be able to get.

I agree with the others, you will be very unlikley to get a council house, even if you cannot pay the rent where you are. Most Councils work on a point system for eligibility, and you will be well down the list, behind those who are genuinely homeless, with young children etc. You will not even be offered emergency "hostel" type accommodation if you make yourself homeless, so best bet is to look at what help you can get to cover the rent where you are living at the moment.

It not just a case of "moving to a council house". You have to be allocated it on the merits of your particular case and circumstances, and I suspect you will not come near qualifying for one.

Where are you living now? Do you own/rent? Have you applied for Job Seekers Allowance or asked about other benefits your household might be entitled to? Could you take in a lodger to raise a little extra income? The council house idea is almost certainly a no-go, so you might as well forget about that one. Could the 18-year-old get a job and contribute to the household once his exams are over and before he goes to uni?

If you are worried about people knowing you live in a council house than I am very pleased you can't get one.

As above, moving out now will only increase your expenses.

Many LL insurance forbid housing benefits **IF** these are in place before the rental agreement. I.e. in many cases a change of circumstance is seen as a different scenario. ESP if you are assuming this will only be temporary anyway.

Get yourself over to the Benefits board of this forum and find out what help you can get. Stop panicking and jumping on random ideas as there is no chance of a council house.

This thread, the OP's ignorance and rudeness has quite made my day.

Brilliant! This thread is comic genius! Although I am now worried that as I grew up in a council house, I may be giving off some sort of 'aura'...? No wonder no-one wants to sit next to me at work....:D
