Storage heaters - Help!

Hopefully someone will be able to give us some information on this.

We're looking at renting a flat but it has storage heaters (creda ones, one in each bedroom(2), living room and hallway), we have never had to deal with before and are being given conflicting information about how much they cost to run, with parents telling us they are really expensive, but others saying if they are used right it doesn't make much difference.

Help!

I have them, and they suck. I don't know if they're more expensive, but they are hard to control. They charge with heat overnight, so you need to decide you're going to be cold days in advance. They "leak" heat, which means that they give out heat when you don't want it - and there's less left for when you do. This means you need to charge them with more than you want or there will be none left.

If you look at the EPC (Energy Performance Certificate) which the landlord/letting agent should have made available for you to view.

The EPC can also be viewed onlnie @ https://www.epcregister.com/reportSearchAddressTerms.html?redirect=reportSearchAddressByPostcode

There should be a valid EPC for the property if it is offered for rental.

The EPC will show heating costs based on industry average useage and prices, but it will be based on the actual heating system present in the property, m2 of the rooms so should give you a good idea, hope this helps

    - storage heaters are the most cost-effective form of electric central heating

... if you like your warmth. They're rubbish for misers, though.

The main issue with electric heating is that, even if it's efficient, electricity is just bloody expensive compared to gas. That's why electric ovens cost more than gas ones, despite being more efficient.

I doubt storage heaters could ever be cheaper than gas central heating.

Personally I hated them and they cost a fortune. They "store" heat overnight and gradually release through the day. There is a control allowing more heat to be released if required.

This tended to mean the house was warm in the morning, cooling through the day, then when we got in at night we could boost the heat for the evening, but when it's done it's done.

I found it too warm throughout the night/morning and had run out by evening. Or if we had a cold snap it wasn't warm enough because it hadn't been up high enough the night before. Cue turning it up, then it's too hot if the weather is warmer than forecast.

The weather is very unpredictable here, perhaps better in other areas.

Ask the existing tenants how much their electricity bills are - that will give you a an indication as to what bill to expect ;)

    Sounds similar to my setup.

Think ~50 Units at ~7p each on a cold winter night, ~3 Units at ~7p on a summer night.

The ~3 Units are for water heating though. The SH are just not needed during warm weather. We had ours completely off for the bank holiday, and still haven't turned them back on yet.

For those saying they are hard to use, I don't agree. They take a little getting used to compared to GSH, but they are not hard at all.

Set the input to a comfortable level, and let it do the rest. Use the output 'Boost' in the evening if you need it, and always remember to close the output before going to bed. Easy Peasy.
