Bought my V reg 406 HDi from auction 2 years ago,and have been really pleased with it.Have done 22k miles in it since it's purchase, and had very few problems with it,just the usual like servicing, cam belt change, and bottom crank pulley, which did hurt the wallet a bit,but a known problem on this particular type of engine.

Purchase price at the time, including the fees, was £2150,but it had a retail value of £3250+.

Would I buy from auction again?

Absolutely. In fact, one of my neighbours and I,were at the auction where I got mine from, last Tuesday, and may go again tomorrow, just to get information as to what goes at what price, and then he is on about buying a car for the wife,in a few weeks time.

    Ken.
That's my mutt in the picture above.

ok - so, what should I do. Go to the one in Enfield (which luckily isn't very far from me) and not buy just go and watch and see what happens and then on another time go with the idea of buying?

I know u have to pay up front at auctions but can this be on visa etc?

Yeah go to Enfield say this Saturday, buy a catalogue, grab a coffee and walk around the cars. Find the ones you like and take a good look at what kind of condition it is in.

Then take a seat in the auction hall and watch how the auction works.

Not sure if they accept Visa credit cards, but they do accept Visa debit.

You should take someone with you who knows their cars, however, I've relied on watching the dealers avoid the lemons when bidding!
  • thanks. think i will!

I'd say research the car you want and then use auotrader to find it cheap.

There's some real private bargains for cash buyers. And although there's some good buys at the auctions for sure, you always have to wonder why it's being sold there. I feel more comfortable buying off a middle aged lady that's owned the car for years than an auction.

I'd guess 2k would get you a very nice small car, no problem.

I have bought my last 2 cars on Ebay with no problems and here is a tip remember the North and West of the UK is wet and cold for 70% of the time
so cars from that area suffer more from rust caused by road salt and rain.

I must humbly apologise and throw myself on my prostate, in my eagerness to help I missread the Upon Tyne and thought of the Staffordshire Newcastle Under Lyne and in true MSE spirit you point this out, thank you for highlighting and working out the mileage so graphically, when I grow up I to want to be a Keith  but I doubt I can reach that dizzy height of self brilliance.

Singing sister please forgive my horrendous error, I hope you arent travelling up the M6 instead of the A1 ;) I really must stay in more and Keith really must get out more :D
