When I try to send emails from my iPhone 4 I get this message Cannot send mail
Check the account settings for the outgoing server "smtp.gmail.com" and it asks me to put a password in. I have tried to enter my password but to no avail. How do I get into this to change my password . Is it settings ? Then where ?

You need to open Gmail in the web browser and log in to change your password.
Click on the 'cant access your account?' Link if you've forgotten your password. What will your verse be?

Sorry is this in safari ? What do I log in to ? I don't have a gmail email account. I have an email in iCloud ? Which my ntlworld. Email account forwards my mail to. They set this up for me in the apple shop as I was having problems with ntlworld email. It pushes my emails ????0

Then you have the wrong outgoing mail server set, as yours is set to "smtp.gmail.com" as you said in your first post.
Go to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > select your account (my iCloud account is named "iCloud") > Account > Mail (under the "Advanced" section) > SMTP (under the "Outgoing Mail Server" heading) > iCloud SMTP Server > On.What will your verse be?
