My friend has today moved into a flat and just found out that the gas and electric are on "key" meters which he has been told are expensive. When he went to top the kep up he enquired about switching to a "supplier" and paying by DD and was told it would cost about £150 to have the meter removed! Is this correct would anyone know?

many thanks

PPM's cost the same as the suppliers Standard tariff. A meter change is typically £60 per meter, but some suppliers will do it for free in return for your business.
Your friend will be credit checked and may need to pay a returnable 12m deposit.

British Gas, EDF and E.On replace meters for free, according to this website. Maybe he should find which of those would be the cheapest for him (an estimate based on usage from a previous place is necessary if he hasn't lived in the flat for a while) and switch to them.

    subject to credit check
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.

I switched only to find out the charges to change the meters. I bought a house that had british gas meters. Now I was with Scottish power so switched to them and now have to pay £100 to switch both meters. Now should I switch again to a company that doesn't charge or suck it up.

Key cards are often topped up at a local paypoint e.g. newsagent or post office.

Perhaps he should enquire at his local butchers shop :rotfl:

This link explains how the major suppliers treat a request to change from a PPM

He should not use any key left in the flat, he should phone the supplier and get his own devices.
