Growing leeks in clumps

Good morning

Has anyone here done this, and if so, can you offer any advice or opinions?

I'd already separated my leeklets in the usual way so they can become bigger before being planted out individually.

But as there were so many seeds (Musselburgh) in the packet, I've sown some more in modules and thought I'd plant out the resulting shoots in clumps. I'm sure I saw something of the sort on telly a while ago.

I fully expect to get smaller, and more strangely-shaped leeks from the clumps but they'll take up much less space so there's nothing to lose really.

Has anyone else tried this?

Thank you.

  • Never tried it, but I think it sounds like its worth a try!
  • You'll probably just get smaller leeks, thats what happens with mine when they're overcrowded. I drill mine but sometimes it gets clogged and they're just small and a bit bent!

If you do this pick them small and use most as the equivalant of spring onions. Leave one at each spacing to grow on into a fairly normal sized leek. This way you get two crops spread out over a longer period of time.

I always plant the excess as clumps for using as a sort of spring onion. Good for stir fries too.

If you are planting in clumps then I suggest using old piping to force them...this way youll get a better, if a bit thinner leek in clumps.
