I have an earlier version of Outlook, but I expect there's still an Export option in Outlook 2010 which would do it.Hi how do I save / back up my e mail addresses to my external hard drive?

You should be able to select "Export to a file" or similar, and then choose a file format to save into (eg. Excel format). Then (if it's like the earlier version) choose where you want to export from - probably Contacts.
However what I do is backup the whole Outlook data file which includes the Contacts, but also the emails themselves and put that on my external hard drive. You'll have to close down Outlook to do this.
More info here on where to find it.

Hi I have looked on the link and gave up.
Please would you be so kind as to post a step by step instruction on how you do it when you have some spare time

Hmm OK then. However I don't have Outlook 2010 so I'm guessing slightly! I think this is the relevant bit from the web link:- In Outlook 2010, click the File tab.
- Click Account Settings, and then click Account Settings.
- On the Data tab, click an entry, and then click Open Folder Location.
- Once the folder has opened, I would then close down Outlook
- There should be an Outlook Data File in this folder, probably called "Outlook.pst" or (depending on your settings) just "Outlook".
- Click the Start button, and then click Control Panel.
- Open Folder Options. (To locate Folder Options, in the search box at the top of window, type Folder Options. In Control Panel for Windows XP, type Folder Options in the Address box.)
- On the View tab, under Advanced settings, under Files and Folders, make sure "Hide extensions for known file types" is not selected.
- Once you've found "Outlook.pst", you should be able to copy it to your external hard drive.
