alternative to a CTF

We currently have a CTF set up for our 5mth old DD, which is being paid into by various rellies,
me and the wife would like to start up some savings for her, in our names. No matter how well we teach her there is always a chance that on her 18th her CTF will be spent on tatto's and alcopops, we wouldlike to be able to give her a deposit on a house or a car,
we are currently looking at about £40 a month, whats best? a savings acount, shares etc.... one thing that might influence is that me and the wife have a pretty poor credity rating so this my limit our options!
thanks in advance
