Opinions please: E class cabriolet or XF?
OH wants to buy nearly new or new car. Has narrowed the choice to the E class cabriolet or the XF. Looking at 2.2 diesel in both.
mid life crisis car vs. old man's car??
Obv a cabriolet sounds more fun, but the XF is roomier and seems to come with a better spec.
He travels about 15k a year, work is 20 mile motorway commute.

Diesel cabriolet. YUK. Who wants to listen to a diesel engine whilst sitting there with the roof down.
Sewing machine smooth petrol all the way.
Supercharged jag for the shopping car when i win the lotteryCensorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
I still see the Merc as a soft, poseurs machine designed to let the proles see their masters enjoying themselves with the Jag actually being good fun to drive.0

XF, but then I am biased0

another vote for the xf, the merc is the best cruiser in that class of car, but on the bendy bits it is a big softy, the jag is all but as good cruising, but is close to a bmw 5 on the bendy bits.
I have a v6 derv which a much better engine than the 4 pot derv. does 45mpg at 70mph, 40mpg at 80mph and 32mpg at 100mph.
The interior is a lot better than the merc, leather dash, doors etc.
Premium luxury is the best spec, reversing camera is a must have.
Tell oh to have a look on jaguar xf forum, lots of help and info their.0 -

The XF has a much better interior finish, in my opinion.0 -
Why not have the best of both worlds - XK convertible. (crap MPG though)0

i'm with jkpd. I've got an XF MY11 Premium Luxury 3.0d. I had a 2.2d X type prior. It was good but not special, you can't beat the power delivery or smoothness of the V6 lump.
It's like they say on Top Gear. You buy a lower spec car and some day a better model will pull up alongside and you wish you had not bought it..........0 -
How long does he intend to keep the car, once out of warranty i wouldn't want the Tata.
Both will be competent in as much as a 4 cyl Diesel can be, frugal but not exactly enjoyable or even sound pleasant but then we all like different things.
MB's interiors and controls are Gentlemans Club like, the Tata is a bit Zanussi washing machine really starting with the wash program gear selector knob and the twirly dash vents for drying cycle... it has to be said though they would impress small boys.0 -
Would be interested to know how many people saying the Jag is a better drivers car have actually owned or even driven both!
OP - if you have narrowed it down to these choices, then it is simply down to personal taste. One will have very different characteristics to the other but both will be great in their own way. Try them and ...radically... buy the one you like.
That said, local police have an XF as their unmarked car so that's ruined them a bit for me. Can't see one without checking for lights under the front grille! What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?0 -
Thanks for all the opinions.
