Putting mpg video into itunes

I have TV recordings saved as .mpg files and want to put them in the latest version of itunes ready for viewing on ipad.
How do I do this please?
I thought I could just select 'add file to library', click the file I want. Nothing happens. Not sure where to look in itunes either ( TV shows or films? In any event both are empty)
What am I doing wrong?
edit: above works for a .mov file so is it an issue with the .mpg format?

It looks as though the issue is the file type.
Can anyone recommend good free converting software please?0 -
Can you tell us which operating system you are using?
I don't know any free Windows software as I use a different operating system. But I hope someone else will be able to help you out.0 -
Thank you. I'm on windows 8.0

Handbrake. The Windows version should be fine on Windows 8.0

Thank you. I've just tested in itunes and it's there. Picture quality not great. Is that to be expected? Will check the original recording.0

I use the Mac version, but I assume the Windows version will be similar. You can adjust the settings for the output, which should give you a file that matches the quality of the input. On the mac version, there are presets for iPad which should work for you.0
