Free Travel Health Insurance (EHIC)

As a lot of people have probably booked trips to various places in Europe with the insanely cheap deals at the moment, now would be a good time to remind everyone about the EHIC.
The European Health Insurance Card is free to register and takes a few minutes (you'll need the national insurance number or NHS number for everyone you register)
You can get more information about the EHIC and register online here:

It's a good idea to have as a reminder, but I feel I must point out (as it is often confused.....) that:
The card gives access to state-provided medical treatment only, and you'll be treated on the same basis as an 'insured' person living in the country you're visiting. Remember, this might not cover all the things you'd expect to get free of charge from the NHS in the UK. You may have to make a contribution to the cost of your care.0 -
this card is not travel insurance!!!
it covers you for emergency medical treatment only!!
there are clauses attatched to it as well such as in Spain you must register with a doctors practice within 24 hrs of your arrival!! daft but true.
be a true mse and find the cheapest but best travel inurance policy for your needs dont just depend on this card!!
its good to have but in no way should be treated as travel insurance.
the card wil not pay if you need to be repatriated to the uk!!'Children are not things to be moulded, but are people to be unfolded'0 -

Calm down no need to break your ! key, I pointed out that it wasn't travel insurance, but health insurance. If my advice was followed, which was to read the information on the website I linked to, then it is made quite clear that this is not a substitute for travel insurance and shouldn't be taken as such.
I apologise for not detailing the entire terms and conditions, but to be honest the department of healths website explains it better than I could.
This card is worth getting, it's free and covers some emergency situations. Do however read the entire site and make sure you have adequate alternative cover to meet whatever your requirements are.0 -
It is worth getting this (used to be the E111 form) but as previously stated this is not instead of travel insurance but should be taken in counjunction with insurance:j Debt free since 31/01/08:j
