I bought a Qualcast hedge trimmer from Argos last year. It burnt out after a couple of uses. So did the replacement. Never again.

Qualcast used to be high quality, how things change.

And usually such a friendly forum.

 what's unfriendly about what she said? She was just telling of her experience which may help others decide whether to go for it or not. Perfectly valid and certainly not unfriendly.

Sorry to hear your experience, but why did not you bring it back to Argos. Any item bought from Argos will have at least one year Argos in store guarantee. So you should be able to get a replacement or your money back directly from Argos and do not need to contact manufacturer.

I never said I contacted the manufacturer! I did take it back to Argos and got a replacement. The replacement did the same thing so I got a refund on the second occasion. All I was doing was highlighting that a once excellent quality brand like Qualcast is not a patch on what it used to be when it was an old established firm that made the items in Suffolk - probably made in China now with all the cost cutting that incorporates.

  • As what others have said regarding Argos version of Qualcast..I bought a lawn mower and strimmer. Needed to contact Qualcast about something, turned out the garden tools Argos were selling weren't offical Qualcast products.

So, be very careful about buying so called Qualcast products from Argos.

I'm very happy with it; I'd be very surprised if it isn't the real thing; I guess that would be against Trading Standards & somewhat illegal esp. for huge names such as Argos & Homebase to put their reputations against such dishonesty.

what you see is not necessarily what you get! According to this article Qualcast items sold at Argos (and Homebase) are NOT made by Qualcast

"they’ve licensed their brand names to the Home Retail Group so that Home can use those well-established and well-respected names on a range of their own-brand products. Which to put it politely, is a bit shifty innit?"

So that might well explain the quality issues experienced by katieohara3. Cheap tat being sold under a respected brand name  Tut tut.

I have to admit that I bought a qualcast mower from homebase and it WAS GARBAGE.

Took it back the next day for a refund, apparantly a common occurance.

I remember our old Qualcast rotary mower, we got the blade sharpened now and again and it lasted for years and years.
Shame how things go, but I cannot recommend anybody buy Argos or Homebase Qualcast branded products :(

Or as confirmed on Qualcast's own webpage - http://www.qualcast.co.uk/HRG/

So yes Qualcast don't make a lot of their own stuff anymore.
