Posting Overseas

Now i've found my feet with e-bay, I decided it was time that I also started posting abroad.
On my listings i've been putting will post to UK and the following destinations: Europe, US etc.
I've specified a price for UK postage and then put in my descriptions to contact me prior to bidding for a quote to post anywhere outside UK.
Someone from France has bid on one of my items and hasn't messaged me for a quote (the UK delivery was specified as free) it will cost me more to post than what I will actually get for it! Will they just be able to pay for it with the free postage option?

Have I been setting up the international postage options incorrectly?

You need to put the postage prices in for the countries you are posting to.

If you have your settings so that buyers can amend their invoices, then yes, any buyer from any country that you have your listings open to, can bid and pay without adding postage.

Prices for airmail up to 2kg can be found at https://www.royalmail.com. Couriers will be needed for anything over 2kg.

Read the postage sticky to ensure you feel you are covered in the event of loss.

Edit - i am trying to locate the link for your settings, but I cannot at the moment. I don't think this has changed recently but will try and find the info for you.

You need to put your postage rates for different zones up front - or you will end up with massive headaches. The cost of airmail has between double and tripled in two years so you could also be in for a big suprise.

In some ways international is easier. Countries are split into only 3 zones for RM and it is done entirely on weight - the size does not matter as long as it is not over the maximum size limits. Very light items can be cheap to send worldwide.

They will not take anything over 2kg and like the UK a certificate of posting only covers up to 20 Pounds. Insuring for highr values adds a lot to the postage costs so quite a few people do not send higher value items internationally.
  • I've just sold a car stereo to an American buyer, RM would of cost approx. £27 with airsure, I did a quick search and managed to get UPS via Interparcel for £26.00p

Rm's service could take upto two weeks... UPS will have it there within 2-3 working days.

Always, Always check around for prices before adding them to the listing, as you could put off a lot of potential buyers if you don't.

Best bit is, UPS collect from my door, so no need to go to the post office either... (and it's fully tracked with a signature - so your seller protection is covered)

Tracking is especially useful where there will be customs and duty to be paid by buyer before receipt. If buyer refuses to pay on delivery you can usually persuade eBay to remove any poor feedback if you can show it has arisen because buyer refused item due to import taxes.

  • Just upload prices for the three RM zones, very easy. If you don't want to post to certain countries, such as italy, untick itlay as a postage option then tick the 'block buyers from countries I don't post to' button on the advanced selling form.

I think carriers who clear items and then invoice the recipient will come after the seller if it doesn't get paid - no doubt it's buried in their small print that they reserve the right to do this.
