Grass seed - will it grow?
Options
10 days ago I put down some grass seed (this stuff if it make a difference).
The weather has been pretty good during this time. It was a little cold for the first few days, but since then the sun has been out a fair amount of the time. We've had a couple of showers and I've been out there watering the grass once a day (twice on the weekends).
Over the 10 days a grand total of 5 blades of grass have grown over 50sqm:(. Surely I should have seen more 'action' than this? The rest of the seed still looks exactly the same as the day it went down.
Am I being impatient, or is there something wrong?

Quote from Amazon...
surestart Multi-Purpose lawn seed will produce a great looking lawn in just 10 days. Grass will start to appear from 5 days onwards under optimal conditions when the soil is moist.
Well....it's hardly an average April, we're officially three weeks behind the growing season atm. So I don't think conditions are exactly optimal just now. The usual quoted germination time for grass seed is 14-21 days, so 5-10 days sounds a little optimistic unless everything is just spot on. Give it a good two weeks, if not more, once it starts properly it wiil grow like wildfire.Val.0 -
Hi have you protected the seed from the birds? Tasty little snack for them0

Sorry just re-read the seeds are still there!0

Make sure you are watering them at the moment - we've sown a huge lawn around a medlar tree and where the roots are, nothing. Everywhere else; it's coming up now. So we are watering that part every few days.Sanctimonious Veggie. GYO-er. Seed Saver. Get in.0

In my experience there's a huge difference between when a seeded lawn starts to have grass on it and when it actually starts to look like a lawn - so don't put too much store by the claim of a great looking lawn in ten days! Keep watering and it should get there in the end.0

We put some grass seed down about 4 weeks ago.
Nothing happened for first 12 days (and was getting a little disheartened) then on the 13th day I watered it in morning and still nothing but when I went back out that evening there was a slight tinge of green to the area. From there it has developed into a nearly fully covered lawn (60m2) with just a few thin patches. Seemed to really take off between 14-28 days.0 -
I put some seed down 3 weeks ago, and its now slowly started to come up, when I put it down I sprinkled some compost over the top to help it......Ive watered everyday as its so dry here, but you must remember well at least here weve had frosts near on every night , so that will halt things a wee bit even though we get nice sunny days...........0

Thanks for all the replies folks. Turns out I was being too impatient. It's sprung up over the weekend quite nicely. All the growth is concentrated in the centre for now, but I'm much more hopeful that I'll have a lawn after all0

I did a small area 3 weeks ago, it's now nicely green if you take a low view point.
Some weeds/plant shoots breaking through but it's to early to walk on yet.
The secret, or rather most important bit is to keep it continuously wetted, the seed is at a shallow depth so dries very quickly, I've been sprinkling almost every day as no rain.
Someone mentioned birds?, yes they used to be a problem, but has anyone else found that it doesn't seem that way today?
Sparrows were the usual culprits, but they are in decline, only problem I have is cats, couple of ring fences of invisible fishing line seems to work in keeping them off;);)
Great looking lawn in 10 days my backside, might start to look OK by autumnI like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)
Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed0
