Competitive Salary

Does this annoy anyone else? How do you get around it?

I am applying to a lot of jobs in London, which would involved moving, so could do with knowing the minimum salary.

  • One way round it would be to make a day trip to London and register with a few (5 or 6) good or specialist recruitment agencies. An agency works on commission so they'll only take on a post if the employer gives a clear salary.
If you lend someone £20 and never see them again, it was probably £20 well spent...

What annoys you about it? The fact that they don't state exactly what the salary is?
With many jobs, the salary range is quite a wide band, depending upon experience. You need to have an idea what your market value is for the level of skill/experience you have.

And they themselves can just tell you or advertise a competitive salary - you still have no idea till you get the interview. Or they say £25-£35 which could be anything at all.

No its cause the salary is usually low and they do it to get more people to apply then you find out its a lot less than you are on. Or to just get people for a lot cheaper.

There is time and expense in job hunting, CV and interviews (booking holiday) etc. To then get to interview to be told it is less than you are on is a kick in the teeth.

When the job would involve moving to one of the most expensive cities in the world, it is even more important to know whether it is a financially viable option.

Stating a salary range is a reasonable expectation.

Not really, I know my skills are worth X, however my experience would probably imply less than X.

It's rarely competitive.... usually an insult, a starter salary.

By not stating even a clue, or the range, they will attract lots of the wrong sort of people and get ignored by people they were probably looking for.

Employers say they struggle to find good people for jobs .... yet they don't have the common courtesy to advertise what deal they're offering.

My eyes see "competitive salary" and my brain sees "scam, rip off, poor employer".

Sometimes it is because they do not want to limit applications from people that are using the salary to judge the job.

As an example, a company may need a 'financial analyst' for a team of people, and would accept applications from people with a wide variety of experience. Then the decision is made on how to structure the team once they know what type of people are applying and how much salary they require.

This may seem annoying, but in some jobs roles there is a lack of applicants, so the employer does not want to limit applications. If they put the salary too high then they will either get no applications from people with limited experience, or they will be setting incorrect expectations. If they set the salary too low then they will miss out on applications from people that are highly experienced.

So the solution unfortunately is to either go via agencies, or contact the recruiter and give your salary expectations.

Remember that if an agency has a job at, say, £50k, and you contact them and say that you are only looking for jobs at £60k+ then the agency may contact the recruiting company and ask if they would consider paying more for someone with suitable experience.

In summary, 'competitive' means that they set it not just with relation to the job, but also to the experience and expectations of the applicant.

I agree though, it is annoying.

I also find it annoying when the job profile is so vague that it is not even clear what the job actually entails. e.g. the job adverts that mostly talk about the role of the company/department/team and don't really make it clear what the job actually is.

Whenever you see this and it's advertised via an agency they might know so I would call them.

If its a company there is a website called glassdoor, they might have the company listed and maybe some roles in the same field with a salary range.
    Bad luck breeds bad luck.

    Damn I'm doomed.

That still wont say what they are paying.
