Tesco ex display Laptop warranty with Dell

I bought an ex-display Dell Inspiron about a week ago and my wife has just brought it back from a weekend away, so it's the first time I have been able to take a proper look at it.

All seems fine but I do like my Dell warranties, especially the next day, come to the house type warranty. I looked up the warranty status for the machine and it runs out in July 2013.

I bought the machine from Tesco.

What are my options?

extend the Dell warranty in July off my own back?

don't extend it in July and not be able to get an extension in the future?

I have a one year warranty with Tesco.

I was wondering what Tesco will do, if it actually breaks down within a year and how they would get a repair done on an out of warranty (with Dell) laptop.

I said that the machine seems fine, but I did one of the Dell's audit and it failed a couple of tests on the 500gb hard drive and had a message to back everything up as the hard drive is likely to fail in the near future.

I was going to find out how much a two year extension to the warranty would cost from Dell and then ask Tesco to pay half?

What are people's thoughts?

Why do you expect Tesco to pay for an extended warranty for your laptop...?

If the machine breaks down in the next 12 months, they are going to have to pay for it to be fixed. A new hard drive will cost them £50, if tesco or I were to extend the Dell's warranty and it costs tesco less than £50 to do so then wouldn't it make sense financially for them to do so?

If I can get a 2 year extension to the Dell's warranty and I pay for 1 year and they for for the other, isn't that the most sensible way forward ?

Other suggestions are welcome but to answer the question, they are liable for 1 year, and the warranty they have with Dell runs out in 2 months time.

Does anyone know how tescos fulfil their obligations within the first year?

I imagine Tesco will do an in house repair or something of the sort. They have the economy of scale, they're not going to want to fork out to Dell on the off chance a computer might break...

Was it sold to you with a full 12 month warranty? If Tesco have never mentioned this, then you have no right to expect the warranty at all, and any repairs will be done under the sales of goods act. If they did say so, it's likely that they are happy to underwrite any repairs.

You can try asking Tesco, but don't expect it to be fruitful. If you want a Dell warranty, you buy one.

Most warranties are registered when the box leaves the factory and can be updated when a customer buys them, is there an opportunity to register the owner?

I've highlighted the important part of that quote.

You have absolutely no hope of them paying to extend your warranty. Zero.

Dell will have the warranty running from its date of manufacture for 12 months plus a few months to count for time to delivery, in order to make service quicker.

If you go to Dell after July, they will ask you for proof of purchase and just update the warranty in accordance with your date of purchase.

    Ex Display = second hand?

What do Tesco say in their T&Cs about ex-display and warranties?

First thing I'd do is phone Dell and ask if they can change the Warranty expiry and if required you can email them the receipt details.

It's likely a non starter and a simple email or phonecall to dell would of saved your current problem and worrying.

Took CoolHotCold's advice and phoned Dell, they extended the warranty after I emailed them a scanned receipt from Tesco (which clearly stated ex display).

They gave me a good deal on the next day warranty over 3 years and am happy with Dell's Customer service.

Thanks again CoolHotCold as customer service from Tescos would have been pretty poor I am sure.
