Swinton Cancelled my policy- paid up front :/

Good Morning,
I took out insurance for a new car on the 02.03.13 and paid 700 up front. I received the letter asking for proof of no claims about a week later. My old car was with Swinton the previous year and just so happened they came out cheaper on the comparision sites. (even though when I called them to change the car they quoted 2000!!) I didn't contact them until the second letter came asking for proof and a 7 day time limit. I thought they would have cottoned on that my previous insurance was with them last year but obviously didn't so i called them. I spoke with the floor manager and told her the situation, and she said she would deal with it. Yesterday, I receieved a letter stating my insurance had been cancelled and would receive 485 which includes the 50 cancellation fee. I called them and she said, they contacted
Swinton(themselves?!) and the other policy was still running, (which was true, i was selling my old car) so couldn't use the bonus. I sold the car within two weeks and cancelled it. Anyway, she said they tried to contact me by calling me. I never recieved a call or voicemail, to which she replied, we cant leave voicemails as it may give you the impression the policy was still running!! Well, techinally it was, they were just trying to let me know it was gonna be cancelled?!. I never recieved a letter, which she said they sent, and that was enough to warrant them cancelling it. My arguement is they didn't make enough effort to get hold of me. Can they cancel my policy without actually speaking to me personally? How can I find out if they followed their procedure correctly to warrant cancelling it? I'm awaiting a call back from the manager on tues morning, which is handily the date the policy is due to finish.
Thanks in Advance.

You took out the policy saying you had x years NCB available for it - which you didn't as it was still in use on your old car.
Cancelling for this is a bit extreme. They could have run the new policy for a couple of weeks without NCB and applied the NCB once the old policy was cancelled.0
