I wouldn't be scared of competing with a 15/16 year old it's good to see a teenager that actually wants to work hard. But applications should be made on/after his birthday no employer would employ him now not until he is 16.
Fair or unfair those are the rules unfortunately.0 -
Does he belong to any sports clubs, my DD got some part time holiday work at 15 within her sport because she had the experience. Was not a lot, x.xx per session but worth it too her. HTHs0

Just a thought Elsie.. Has he asked the company he did work experience with?0

Ok, so i'll go back to a quote i made before.....
What is age discrimination
It's against the law for your employer to treat you worse than other colleagues at work because of your age, unless they've got a very good reason. It's also against the law for an employer to dismiss you or to refuse to employ you, just because of your age, unless they've got a very good reason. If your employer does this, it's called age discrimination. An employer is not allowed to discriminate against you either for being too young or for being too old.
To me, not having insurance to employ someone who is legally old enough to work..... surely this is discrimination?
Oh how I want to take this further, and I think I will!
How are you going to prove discrimination though?0 -

A year 11 leaver can legally work after the school leaving date which is the last Friday in June.0 -

Yes, he does already..... it's also where he does voluntary work coaching the new young members.... but they are a registered charity and the coaching staff work on a voluntary basis. It's great for him, but so would some paid work be.0 -
https://www.gov.uk/child-employment/minimum-ages-children-can-work
Basically this page says a child can work part time from the age of 13. Once they turn 18 they have employment rights and rules to protect them.
If one were to employ a child they are subject to lots of restrictions:
Children are not allowed to work:- without an employment permit issued by the education department of the local council, if this is required by local bylaws
- in places like a factory or industrial site
- during school hours
- before 7am or after 7pm
- for more than one hour before school (unless local bylaws allow it)
- for more than 4 hours without taking a break of at least 1 hour
- in most jobs in pubs and betting shops and those prohibited in local bylaws
- in any work that may be harmful to their health, well-being or education
- without having a 2-week break from any work during the school holidays in each calendar year
These restrictions themselves do not put <16 year olds and adults on a level playing field so discrimination won't apply. It's like comparing apples and oranges, sorry.
It's only a game
