Automatic Switching to Lowest Energy Tariff

npower, the company with the innovative tax arrangements, has just switched me off the year long deal I was on, changing my dd from £48 to £60 pm. A quick dive into Martin's Cheap Energy Club shows npower do a great deal...but they haven't put me on it.
So... I reckon I was wrong thinking the switching to the lowest tariff happens automatically. Was I wrong, because if so I reckon its worth making sure everyone else is not making the same generous and trusting assumption.

I suspect you have been 'defaulted' to n'powers Standard tariff - there was a time when customers coming to the end of a deal, were being rolled onto another with Exit Penalties by their suupplier.
Ofgem eventually woke up and the guidelines now are that when a deal ends, the customer cannot be auto- rolled onto a Tariff with Exit Penalties, which just leaves the Standard tariff.
