When I read the title I envisaged tiles everywhere. Up the walls and on the ceiling too. :D

You are not the only one. :p

I thought the OP was going for the 'gents loo at a motorway services' look.

We tiled the whole of the downstairs area in not our last house but the one before that. It was actually what clinched the sale for us in early 2008 when the property market here was almost at a standstill. I loved it and will eventually do the same in this house when my two youngest children are a bit older.

no I wouldn't.. I don't like the kitchen being tiled though it looks beautiful when clean.. I can't think of anything less appealing than a tiled room you are supposed to relax and lounge about in.

I feel exactly the same as pigpen.
But clearly some people love it, so for them it can work.

Have you young children, or intend to have kids? Tiles are cold to play on and really very hard to fall on.

I personally would tile the kitchen and have laminate everywhere else, for continuity. To me tiles are for kitchens and bathrooms only.
My 18 month old niece sleeps on the tiled floor... because of the underfloor heating it is the warmest place in my brother's house (and they were renovating over the winter). She's managed to do more damage to herself falling over on carpet than she has on the tiles... after all carpet quite often has concrete floor underneath it.
I have bamboo flooring in the hall, that's much warmer and very pretty.
I've used bamboo in the kitchen as well as my hall, because at the time I was doing the house up it was cheaper than tiling (which is expensive in terms of labour) and I couldn't afford underfloor heating. It's surprisingly hard wearing.

I have Italian friends who have tiled throughout in this country, and their house has a definite mediterranean feel. And is easy to clean... I guess I'd prefer it to carpet, which is my least favourite type of flooring...

The easy to clean bit is what was the eventual deciding factor for me. A quick vacuum and then steam clean and you could most probably eat off of the floor, (never tried it and have no intention of doing so!). I now have amtico and don't like it nearly so much. :(. I am with you on the carpet thing, I detest them as they are so unhygienic. I prefer washable rugs that can go through the machine at least once per week.

Thanks for all the replies, plenty to think about now :)

I've not really thought about what style of tiles I mean, I envisaged a nice big tile, maybe in a neutral colour.... But that will show up the dirt too easily, with two dogs that's not a good thing!

I might just stick to the kitchen and dining room tiled, look at wooden floor for the living room and hall. Might make the living room more homely feeling.

Need to look into heating in the rooms as well, maybe underfloor heating would be good. Currently there is a small radiator at the bottom of the kitchen and a gas fire in the bedroom (it used to be the living room and the fire never got took out). The fire needs ripped out, so I will need a radiator in that room.

Oh I've got so much to think about and possibly a lot of money to spend :(
Can't think of anything smart to put here...
