Maybe they are concerned (or rather their system is concerned) that after a significant time of no contact you have (apparently) changed your direct debit details, and now asked for a cash transfer.

Basically, it is possible it is a fraud/identity theft issue, rather than a credit issue. This fits with the fact that they are o.k. if it goes to a Barclays current account.

I would ask more details about the direct debit. Also if you have changed any other details (e.g. address, password, pin) within the last few weeks.

I've had a Barclaycard for eight years, and only last month did I, for the first time ever, get a current account transfer offer - BT offers to other credit cards have been fairly consistent, so I doubt OPs credit rating is to blame.

I've had a Barclaycard for 25 years! The Platinum one for about 5 years I suppose. Never had a current account transfer offer, but regularly get BT offers. Limit is £12000. Balance is sometimes zero, rarely more than £2000 in the last couple of years.

Thinking about it again I did get a bt to my bank account and the rate on offer was 12 percent. However this was about 2 years ago.

This bolsters my thoughts on closing it to be fair, I keep my BC because it's currently my oldest CC, and also my highest limit.

    Anyway that's for another thread!

She was busy making 15 post in 13 minutes. Do you really think she had time to read anything besides the titles? LOL.

The request was passed to Barclaycard complaints and this morning I received a phone call from them. They explained that because the card has been inactive for almost 12 months their systems did automatically renew the direct debit. They said it is their policy not to allow money transfers to a bank account that has had any changes made, whether by their own system or by the customer. The complaints department apologised. :) They have offered me a workaround which is hopefully going to work. They will transfer the money to another credit card and I can then withdraw the cash as a standard cash withdrawal. I then tell them how much the crdit card charges for the cash withdrawal and they refund it. So in effect I get the money so I can pay it in to my bank account and it costs the same. I have a Halifax card that has zero balance so I'm going to use that. I'll let you know if this works. Its a bit like the old Egg card process (the mule card). Thanks for all the replies.

Edit: I believe my credit history is sound. Never missed a mortgage payment, never missed a credit card payment, never defaulted on loans. I have several credit cards only one with a balance at the moment in 0% period which I have tarted (is that the right word) and will not use it until it needs tarting again. The reason for doing the money transfer is to pay off a bank overdraft costing me £3 a day .

They have made the transfer and refunded the fee. Amazing. It is still showing as a pending transaction (they did advise me it would take a day) and they refunded the fee at the same time. Its all depending now whether the Halifax will charge me for making a cash withdrawal on the card or whether they will allow me to just transfer the positive balance in to my bank account for no fee (also a Halifax). Could end up being the deal of the month!

EDIT: I have hit a problem. Halifax CC questioned why there was a credit balance and when I explained the situation and what I was trying to do they offered only one thing; refund back to Barclaycard. I have a balance transfer request pending to my Virgin card that allows transfers to bank accounts but I don't yet know what Halifax will do. They may refuse the BT and send the money back to Barclaycard.
