dogs teeth

We've been having a brilliant time with Scamp, he is fabulous. The only problem I can see is that his teeth are pretty well covered in plaque. He spits crunchy food and treats out although he will eat them eventually. We're going to pop along with him to the vet's and see what they say, and I'm trying to get him used to his doggy toothbrush and paste. My previous dogs had good teeth but it looks like he hasn't been given any bones or chews. I will pop to the butcher and get some proper bones for him to see if he'll chew them but is there anything else I can do to help him? Obviously I'd like to avoid the full on clean if we can because of the general anesthetic.

I had the same issue with my Lulu.
Dried food for a few months and late night chewstick has seen it diminish by 90%

Thanks. Did you add water to the dry food or is it better not to?

Water available at all times in a separate bowl.

PS I think having TLC came into it too, she was a rescue, literally having been thrown from a moving car.

Oh the poor thing. How can people be so cruel?

He always has plenty of water in his blue bowl which I put a little bit of apple cider vinegar in.

Logic toothpaste from your vet, about twelve pounds a tube but it is enzymatic and helps break down the plaque even after brushing. It's good stuff.

Been giving mutt bones while I wait for the toothpaste to arrive. At first he didn't know what to do with them - just carried it around in his mouth but he figured it out eventually and has been gnawing on them. 2 bones and some bedtime dentastix later and his teeth are about 85% better.

He's also eating most of his food after I switched him from Arden Grange Lamb to Chicken.

  • For ongoing help with this, try giving him the odd carrot / other hard veg that he needs to chomp on - it works wonders!

You can also try "Plaque Off". Tiny scoop on food each day so a "tub" goes a long way . It makes the plaque easier to remove by softening it.If you have hard nails as some folk (not me) you can then just flick it off.
