For years I always use ten litre black buckets from the builders merchants with the base cut out, filled with John Innes number 3 and sat on a large plant suacer filled with gravel. As stated by a previous contributor to this thread, the larger roots seek the water in the saucer but the finer feeding roots stay in the soil.
Water the feed in the soil and fill the saucers with plain water. The soil doesnt become waterlogged due to the gravel and the whole watering system is less critical as you have a large reservoir. I guess its a cross between hydroponics and soil culture. But if your at work all day or away for the week end it works great. Good heavy bucket to stabilise a large and heavy tomato plant.
I use a superspray hose end feeder attched to my hosepipe. it will dilute plant food as you feed the pot or spray clean water into the saucer. No watering cans and mixing. save me a lot of time. The whole system looks neater than grow bags etc0
